Cherry Surprise Cookies

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 oz can (6 oz) canned jellied cherry sauce

Cream sugar, butter, salt; add egg, vanilla; mix again.  Fold in sifted flour and baking powder.  Blend well.  Chill dough.

Roll out half the dough on board dusted with flour and a little sugar.  Use two inch cookie cutter, cut 20 cookies; place on slightly creased cookie sheet 1/2 inch apart.  Put 1/2 teaspoon jellied cherry sauce in center of each cookie.  Moisten edge of each cookie with water or milk.

Cut out 20 more cookies and place on top of cookie with filling.  Press down lightly on sides.  Prick with fork.  Bake at 375 degrees for 12 to 14 minutes.
