Wheat Germ Cupcakes

1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup chopped filberts
powdered sugar

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla.  Beat until fluffy.  Sift and measure flour.  Re-sift with salt, soda, baking powder and spices.  Alternately add with wheat germ and milk to creamed mixture.  Stir in nuts.  Fill muffin tins 2/3 full.  Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.  Sprinkle with powdered sugar while still warm.

Yield: 1 dozen large cupcakes
