White Cake

1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter or substitute
1 cup cold water
2 1/2 cups cake flour
4 egg whites unbeaten
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla

Cream sugar and shortening together.  Add water and flour, alternating, beat 10 minutes with electric mixer.  Fold the unbeaten egg whites in one at a time.  Add the flavoring and baking powder last.  Bake at 375 for layers or 350 for a loaf.

1 cup sour cream
1 cup sugar

Boil until it forms soft ball wen tried in cold water.  Set in pan of cold water until cool.  Beat until creamy, add 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1/2 cup chopped walnuts.
