Almond Christmas Cake

1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 pound almonds, blanched and chopped
1/2 pound grated coconut
1/4 pound candied cherries
5 egg whites, beaten stiff
1 1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon almond extract

Cream butter and sugar.  Add almonds, coconut and cherries.  Blend together with fingers.  Fold in half of the beaten egg whites.  Sift flour and baking powder together and add to the mixture.  Fold in extract and remaining half of egg whites.  Turn into 1 loaf pan.  Bake in 350-degree oven for 2 hours.
