Date-and-Cheese Bread

3/4 cup boiling water
1/2 pound dates, cut fine
1 3/4 cups sifted enriched flour
1 teaspoon soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg, well beaten
1 cup grated American cheese
3/4 cup chopped nuts

Pour boiling water over dates and let stand 5 minutes.

Sift flour and measure.  Add soda, salt and sugar, and sift again.  Add date mixture, egg, cheese and nuts.  Mix well.

Bake in waxed paper-lined 9 1/2-by-5 1/4-by-2 3/4-inch loaf pan in moderate oven, 350 degrees, about 50 mintutes.
